Classic Cars In Saudi Arabia - Fear of Driving In Traffic

Today, I had a great opportunity of talking to a young lady who had done a stint in Saudi Arabia teaching English to the royal family. As you know, with all the offspring the royal family is absolutely huge there's over 35,000 people who call themselves royals, and that comes with a lot of benefits and well, a great lifestyle considering how much Saudi Arabia sells the rest of the world oil, a good chunk of it ends up coming here in the United States. So imagine how much money flow there is?

In some years depending on the price of a barrel of sweet crude oil, Saudi Arabia may have a trade surplus with the United States of between 160 and 210 billion dollars - with all of this money the Saudi's, especially those in the royal family can have just about anything they want. They will often show up that car shows, and classic auto auctions and bid up the prices. They will have these magnificent automobiles, antique and classic cars, some of them one-of-a-kind left in the world, shipped back to Saudi Arabia. There's only one problem with all of this.

As my acquaintance that teaches English in Saudi Arabia told me the driving habits of a good many Saudi males, and remember women are not allowed to drive yet, although some of the do sometimes, there are quite a few accidents, and a lot of disobeying of traffic rules. In fact, since drinking is not allowed, there are no laws on the books that you can't drive intoxicated. Only now are these laws starting to appear in their driving codes and rules. You can imagine that it would be difficult and scary to drive a one-of-a-kind automobile, a classic or antique car, which cannot be replaced when everyone is driving in a crazy fashion.

There might be someone making a U-turn on a 5 lane road across all lanes of traffic. When the British built a number of the roads there they put in roundabouts in many of the traffic intersections. Sometimes people make U-turns against traffic, or take the shortcut when making a turn on to a perpendicular street rather than using the roundabout. Imagine the chaos that causes. Would you really want to drive your classic automobile and have some yahoo who may or may not understand the laws of physics attempt his fate in trying some exotic maneuver?

Maybe that's why many of the classic cars in Saudi Arabia are driven very rarely or with a lot a precaution, or not at all. Of course, when you have all the money in the world, perhaps you are driving your antique or classic car like everyone else, but in that case it's only a matter of time before you get into an accident. Please consider all this and think on it.
