How to Repair Rust Off a Classic Car

If you are the owner of a classic car or have bought a used car, you may be concerned about fixing the rust in its body. Rust starts off due to scratched paint or a minor accident. The rust starts as a spot and spreads, mostly starts underneath the car and moves upward. Whether you want to sell your car or use it, the car will look better without the rust.

Before you begin examining the car for rust, make sure you wear rubber gloves, a dust mask and safety glasses for protection. The rust, dust and paint dust can severely affect your eyes or lungs.

The first step is to look for the rust and identify the parts affected by it. Rust can hide in cracks and under the carpets. Tape the area around the crack or dent with paper tape, which generally doesn't affect the paint. Make sure that all the windows are rolled up as dust particles will fly in all directions while you are working.

Tap the rusted area lightly with a hammer to find an area that seems soft. You can fix any of the sections you discover.

You can use an electric grinder and sand paper to get rid of the rust if it is in an initial stage. Use a primer to protect it from further rust and ultimately get it repainted.

You will need an air compressor, a grinder with a blade to cut with, a metal sheet and a welder. Draw a line around the rusted area and then another one going two inches outside the first line. The purpose is to get all the rusted part out.

Use your grinder and cut along your line until all the rusted area has been removed from your car. Put the piece that you just removed onto your metal sheet and draw an outline. Cut it out with your grinder. Smooth out the rough edges of your metal plate piece with the grinder.

Fit your metal piece into the hole in your car, using grips to hold it in its place. You will now use the welder to weld from on all sides and then take the grips out. If you have some experience in welding, you should be able to do it in a way that the welds don't show.

All you need to do now is paint and polish it within the next twenty-four hours and your classic car is rust free. If you do decide to sell your car, you will definitely get better value.
